Tomb Raider -- Lara's Home / Training Level

First Steps
Tomb Raider includes a training level, where Lara Croft walks you through all the various moves you must master in order to complete the game.

Select the picture of Lara's Home from the Game Menu Ring. Enjoy the short full-motion video introducing Lara's mansion. Notice her trusty Norton Streetfighter motorcycle parked outside her front door. Inside Lara's home, you can practice and refine all the moves required for her upcoming adventure.

Library
Lara is initially upstairs in the library facing a pair of windows.
Lara:
"Welcome to my home! I'll take you on a guided tour."

Just for fun, RUN FORWARD to the window ahead and look down to see the grounds outside. TURN RIGHT or TURN LEFT one hundred-eighty degrees, and RUN FORWARD
Lara:
"Use the direction keys to go into the music room".

Use the cursor keys to RUN FORWARD, TURN RIGHT, and TURN LEFT to run forward past the fireplace and billiard table, then down the steps into the next room.
Music Room
Enter the music room and run up onto the large blue gym mat.
Lara:
"Okay! Let's do some tumbling. Press the jump button."

Press the jump button to JUMP STRAIGHT UP in place.
Lara:
"Now press it again, then quickly press one of the directions and I'll jump that way."

Learn to JUMP FORWARD (STANDING JUMP), JUMP BACKWARD (BACK FLIP), JUMP RIGHT, and JUMP LEFT on the big blue mat.
Main Hall
When facing the piano and the harp, turn right to head out to the main hall.
Lara:
"Ah, the main hall. Sorry about the crates. I'm putting some things into storage and the delivery people haven't been in yet."

Run down the stairs to the main hall. (Notice the Ark of the Covenant beside the main door!)
Lara:
"Run up to a crate, and while still pressing forward, press action, and I'll vault up onto it."

For the shorter crates, Lara can easily VAULT UP onto them. For the taller crates, press forward and the action button to GRAB the top of the crate, and press the up arrow to PULL UP onto the top of the crate.
Ballroom
With Lara's back to the front door, head over a few crates toward the far left corner and into the ballroom.
Lara:
"This used to be the ballroom, but I converted it into my own personal gym. What do you think? Well, let's do some exercises."

Run up ramp number one.
Lara:
"I don't actually run everywhere. When I want to be careful, I walk. Hold down the walk button, and walk to the white line."

Walk up to the middle of the structure
Lara:
"With the walk button down, I won't fall off, even if you try to make me. Go on, try it."

Walk to the white line.
Lara:
"If you want to look around, press and hold the look button. Then press in the direction you want to look."

Learn to LOOK UP, LOOK DOWN, LOOK RIGHT, and LOOK LEFT.

After hopping off the first structure, turn right and run up to the top of ramp number 2.
Lara:
"If a jump is too far from me, I can grab the ledge and save myself from a nasty fall. Walk to the edge with the white line until I won't go any further. Then press jump immediately followed by forward, and while I'm in the air, press and hold the action button."

Learn how to do a STANDING JUMP and GRAB per Lara's instructions.
Lara:
"Press forward, and I'll climb up."

Press forward to PULL UP onto the platform.

After climbing up onto the structure, turn right and hop off to go up ramp number three.
Lara:
"If I do a running jump, I can make a jump like that no problem."

At the top of ramp number three Lara will give further instructions.
Lara:
"Walk to the edge with the white line until I stop. Then let go of walk and tap backwards to give me a run-up. Press forward, and almost immediately, press and hold the jump button. I won't actually jump until the last minute."

Go ahead and practice a RUNNING JUMP.

Turn left and hop off to run up ramp number four.
Lara:
"Right. This is a really big one. So do a running jump exactly as before, except while I'm in the air, press and hold the action button to make me grab the ledge."

Do a RUNNING JUMP and GRAB.
Lara:
"Nice!"

Turn right and run up ramp number five.
Lara:
"Try to vault up here. Press forward, and hold action."

VAULT UP and GRAB the ledge.
Lara:
"I can't climb up because the gap is too small. But press right, and I'll shimmy sideways until there is room. Then press forward."

SHIMMY RIGHT until Lara can pull herself up. Then practice the SAFETY DROP as described by Lara.
Lara:
Tap backwards and I'll jump off backwards. Immediately press and hold the action button, and I'll grab the ledge on the way down.
Swimming Pool
After performing the SAFETY DROP, REVERSE ROLL and head to the right through a doorway between two knight statues.
Lara:
"Let's go for a swim!"

Head forward down the steps.
Lara:
"The jump button and the directions move me around under water."

Practice swimming around under water using SWIM FORWARD, TURN RIGHT, and TURN LEFT.

Head up to the surface.
Lara:
"Ah! Air! Just use forward, and left, and right, to maneuver around on the surface. Press jump to dive down for another swim about, or go to the edge and press action to climb out."

Practice swimming around on the surface. When you're done, climb out of the pool.
Lara:
"Right. Now I better take off these wet clothes."

The training level will end at this point.1

Footnotes:
  1. If Lara pulls up out of the pool on the side nearest to the entrance and immediately takes a STANDING JUMP over the side of the large ornament between the two columns, the training level will not end. Lara will be free to wander around the house again. However, the training level will automatically end of she steps near the swimming pool once more.
