Egypt was occupied by the Roman Empire and this temple, which is
dedicated to the Roman god Poseidon is an example of Rome's influence
on Egypt. Egyptians were extremely skillful architects, but Romans had a lot of knowledge of plumbing and how to get water from reservoirs to the inside of buildings. This temple is a monument to Roman engineering. The temple, in its full glory had water flowing throughout, but the water sources have been sealed off over the years. Watch your step, as the central chamber sports a nasty fall if you're not careful. |
