Caves of Kaliya
Items: 12
Kills: 15
Step forward to the first intersection2. Lara can choose to go left or right. Turn left and run forward following the tunnel as it turns right.

At the next intersection Lara will find that the passage forks and she can turn left or right. Turn towards the wider part of the tunnel on the left.

Immediately, Lara will be confronted with another choice, whether to go straight or turn right. take the right turn and run forward. Until Lara reaches a point where the tunnel is too small to walk through. Crouch down and crawl into the small tunnel.

Lara will be at another intersection. Ahead the tunnel ends at an alcove, and Lara can continue crawling to the right or to the left, where the tunnel is taller. Turn right and crawl until Lara can stand. Once Lara is standing, draw weapons and follow the tunnel's bend to the left. Run forward and around the next corner Lara will find a cobra (1). Kill it and turn around. Follow the tunnel back until it comes to the smaller tunnel. Turn right and crouch down and crawl back into the small tunnel until Lara comes back to the intersection.

This time, continue straight ahead, through the intersection, and stand up. Run forward and Lara will come to another intersection.

To the right the tunnel gets smaller, while to the left the tunnel continues for a little further. Turn right and crouch down. Crawl forward to the next intersection. This next intersection isn't much of a choice. The tunnel ends at a pit on the left or continues to the right. Turn right and continue forward until the tunnel ends and Lara can stand. Pick up the Uzi clips (1), and turn around. Crouch down and crawl forward, and follow the tunnel as it turns left.

When the tunnel gets taller, Lara will be back at the earlier intersection. Continue straight forward until the tunnel becomes smaller again. Crawl into the small tunnel and Lara will be at another intersection.

Lara can either crawl forward or turn right at this intersection. Take the right turn and crawl forward until Lara can stand. Run forward and Lara will be at another intersection.

At this next intersection, Lara can turn left, which leads to a pit, or right. Turn left and light flare. Run forward and drop into the pit. Turn right and drop deeper into the pit. Pick up the box of flares (2) and turn around. Climb up to the next ledge, and turn right. Climb again to return to the tunnel. Lara is now on the opposite side of the pit from where she dropped in.

Run forward and follow the tunnel as it bends left. Run forward, and Lara will reach an intersection with a tunnel on the left. Continue straight ahead. The tunnel will soon widen with another tunnel that leads off on the left. Continue forward until Lara reaches an intersecting tunnel on the right. Turn right and run forward, following the tunnel until it turns left.

Run forward, and when Lara reaches the alcove on the right, she will be back to where she started. Run forward and follow the tunnel until it bends left. Crouch down and crawl forward through the small tunnel. When the tunnel becomes taller, stand up and walk forward. This would be a good place to save the game. Notice the boulder hanging above Lara's head. It will drop down and roll forward when Lara slides down the slope.

Step forward and slide down the slope. Press the forward key as Lara is sliding so that she will take off running when she reaches the bottom. When she gets to the bottom of the slope, press the sprint key and run forward and duck into the tunnel on the left to avoid the boulder
3.

Step forward and Lara will find an alcove on the right. Walk one block past the alcove and then reverse roll. Another boulder will be released, sprint back to the alcove and dodge to the left to avoid the boulder4.

When it's safe, turn around and exit the alcove. Head to the right toward where the boulder came from. The tunnel becomes smaller and continues higher up, so pull up into the smaller tunnel and crawl forward. Beyond this stricture, the tunnel will be tall enough to stand. Lara will be at an intersection where she can go left or right.

Turn left and run forward, following the tunnel as it bends right. Draw pistols and around the next corner there will be a cobra (2). Kill the cobra and turn around. Follow the tunnel as it bends back to the left. Run forward until Lara passes the small tunnel she crawled through earlier. Just past the small tunnel is an intersection where Lara can turn left or continue forward.

Lara should continue straight until she comes to another intersection. At this intersection, Lara can turn right or left. Follow the right tunnel and continue as the tunnel takes three left turns. At the end of this tunnel, Lara will find a box of shotgun shells (3). Turn around and follow the tunnel back as it takes three turns to the right.

Lara will find herself back at the intersection she was at earlier. Continue straight ahead and the tunnel will zig to the right. Soon Lara will come to an intersection with a raised step on the ground.

Turn right and follow the tunnel as it turns left. Draw weapons and step forward. Kill the cobra (3), and pick up the small Medi Pack (4). Turn around and follow the tunnel as it bends right. Run forward until Lara is back at at the intersection with the raised step. Run straight ahead to what appears to be a dead end.

The wall ahead is actually a movable block, so push it forward once to reveal that the block was in the center of a four way intersection. The block is sitting in passage that heads forward. Lara can now go either left or right. Take the right turn and run forward to the next intersection.

Ahead and to the left the tunnel ends at small alcoves, so take the only choice that remains and turn right. Run forward and Lara will reach another intersection. To the right the tunnel ends at a alcove, so turn left and run forward. Follow the tunnel as it winds to the left and then to the right. Lara will come to another intersection. At that point, the tunnel on the left ends at an alcove, so turn right and run forward. Follow the tunnel as it turns to the right. Run forward and drop down the pit at the end of the tunnel.

Turn right and follow the tunnel forward, stepping down and then dropping to the lower tunnel. Run forward and turn right. Climb up onto the higher ledge and turn left. Crouch down and crawl forward until the tunnel opens to a height tall enough to stand. Turn left and take a step forward and Lara will find herself at an intersection.

Turn right and run forward until Lara comes to another intersection. Ahead, Lara can see that the tunnel becomes shorter, turn left and run forward until Lara comes to an intersection with a tunnel on the right.

Take the tunnel on the right and draw weapons. The shorter tunnel Lara saw earlier will join from the right, instead turn left and take out the cobra (4) around the next corner. Turn around and follow the tall tunnel to the right. At the next intersection, Lara can turn left or right.

Take the left passage and soon Lara will be back at an earlier intersection. To the left, Lara should be able to see the shorter tunnel again. Instead turn right and run forward. Lara will be at another intersection where Lara can turn left or right.

Take the right turn and follow the tunnel as it turns left. Run forward and drop down to the lower tunnel. Follow the tunnel as it zigs to the right. Run forward and continue following the tunnel as it bends right. Finally, Lara will find herself in a small dark room with a pit in the middle. Step forward and pick up the box of flares (5) ahead. Turn left and take a standing jump over the pit to collect the crystal (6).

Lara should be able to hear the cobra below. Safety drop into the snake pit and Lara will take a little damage from the long fall. Draw weapons as Lara is falling and don't take a single step in any direction when Lara lands, because she is standing in between four cobra (5, 6, 7, 8). Open fire on the two cobra ahead of Lara and when they are dead, spin around in place and take out the two behind her.

Light a flare and notice that there is a boulder at the top of a slope at one end of the room. Walk slowly along the wall toward the other side of the room, and Lara will reach a slope that prevents her from walking further. Draw weapons and kill the cobra (9) that is beyond the slope.

After the snake is dead, take a standing jump over the slope and the boulder will be released and roll safely past. Turn right and across the room is another cobra (10), so keep weapons drawn and kill it. Now every other block down the long room, Lara will encounter pairs of snakes. Light a flare and walk forward, when Lara can see the pair of cobra (11, 12), she should draw pistols and take them out.

Repeat this process of lighting a flare, stepping forward until Lara can see the next pair of cobra (13, 14), and draw weapons and blast the next pair. After killing them, enter the smaller tunnel ahead. When Lara reaches the boulder, side step to the right and crouch down. Crawl forward and to the right into the small tunnel.

Crawl forward and follow the tunnel as it turns left. Stand up when the tunnel is tall enough for Lara to do so. Step forward and drop down. Pick up a small Medi Pack (7), then step forward and collect a crystal (8).
Tony
Draw pistols and stand to the right side of the tunnel. Slide forward and as soon as Lara takes aim on Tony (15) who is in the middle of the next room, open fire and keep the fire key down until he explodes. When Lara slides to the platform below, side step to the right until Lara has enough room to side flip to the left. While still firing, take alternating side flips, first to the left and then to the right. Keep moving side to side, to avoid his fireballs, and firing until he is dead.
Infada Artifact
After the creature explodes, take standing jumps to the platforms around the room and collect a small Medi Pack (9), a grenade launcher (10), and a pair of grenades (11) from each of the platforms around the periphery of the room. Avoid the liquid that surrounds the platforms. It's not water, but rather something deadly. Take a running jump to the platform in the center of the room and pick up the Infada Artifact (12).

Lara climbs out of the dark caves. Sunlight filters down through the dense foliage. Lara checks the time. Sajit is probably long gone, and if he wasn't now, he certainly would be by the time Lara hiked back up to where she left the Jeep. "So much for my deposit," Lara sighs.

Lara steps forward into the sunlight and blinks a few times until her eyes adjust. She can hear the puttering of a motor and scans around to find its source. A boat appears rounding a turn in the river and slows down in front of her. A figure on the boat calls out to her in a hoarse voice, "Hey!", and gestures for her to hop aboard.

Lara is suspicious, but figures the ride will be better than hiking out of the jungle, so the runs across the banks and leaps gracefully aboard the boat. The man aboard the ship is Doctor Willard5.

Willard casually, "I don't want to be misrepresented by that retarded researcher you just been with, er..." He gestures for a name.

"Lara," she replies.

Not waiting for her reply, Willard turns, walks to the shade of the canopy of the boat, and sits down at a table. "I'm Doctor Willard. I'd come to converse with Tony myself, but I saw you doing a rather more creditable job, I think. Indeed, I'm inspired. I'd like to offer ye other work." Willard gestures Lara to take a seat.

Lara follows him, walking past the pilot of the boat. "What? Shoot the breeze with some of your other boys?" Lara grins and sits down, "No thanks."

"Fortunately," Willard points out, "they were the only lab rats we let loose into the field. Naw, my request is for three other artifacts like this." He points to the carved artifact on Lara's hands.

"The Infada tribe only had the one artifact of this type." Lara looks down, examining it, "It's unique." "Anyway," Lara looks up suspiciously, "what would your interests in it be?"

"I'll show ye," Willard reaches out and opens his palm. Lara looks him over and then places the artifact in his hand. "It's not from India," Willard continues, as he reaches over to open a shiny case beside him. "Rather, an island near Antarctica." Willard reaches into the case and picks up a small pen-like device and opens up a small palmtop computer. "It is in fact meteorite rock," Willard continues, as he begins to scan the Infada stone with the device, "that has been fashioned and used by Polynesians who were once settled there many many years ago. See that?" Willard points excitedly to a spike in the three dimensional graph on the color screen of the computer. "That's unique. An unknown material."

"So how did it end up here?" Lara asks.

Willard, now standing answers while making grand gestures with his hands, "Formed from the planets, sculpted by Polynesians, distributed by goons. Our excavations and investigations have lead us to this." Willard points to a large book, which is also lying in foam padding within the steel case, "A sailer's diary from his voyage on Charles Darwin's expedition on the HMS Beagle."

Lara picks up the book and notices the cover. It has been inscribed, "S. Barr, HMS Beagle, Journal". She flips the book open to a book marked entry and begins to read, "August fourteenth, eighteen thirty four." As Lara reads the words, the authors voice echos in her mind. She pictures the scene described by Stephen Barr. "This voyage is getting too boring for me to continue with this journal..."

The voice of Stephen Barr rings now loud in her minds eye, "...me adventures at sea are an embarrassment. The only tales I'll 'ave to tell are hours of bird watchin', pickin' and pressin' flowers, followin' them blasphemous ideas of the guv'nah, Darwin." Stephen writes this as sea gulls fly over head. He looks out across an expanse of ocean to an icy island, "But this don't even concern me now. I jus' want food. Somethin' more than vegetable broth in me." Five men, Smythe, Henderson, Caulfield, Jonson, and Barr, climb aboard a small boat and row to the shores of the frozen island, "Today, we five 'ave made a pact. The only sampling we're gonna be doing is for meat... pure, solid, blood-rich meat." The men follow tracks that across the icy landscape. The prints look somewhat like animal tracks, but have features like that of a barefoot man.

They track the creature's prints into a icy cave. Inside, icicles dangle from the ceiling and rise up from the floor. They light lanterns to light their way. "The snow's run out," Smythe points out. "The tracks 'ave gone."

"Jus' keep goin'," Henderson tells them. "We're on its trail." They continue forward into the beautiful ice cavern. They cross a narrow bridge of ice. Stephen, lagging behind, looks down and sees the floor of the cavern is covered with stalagmites of ice. They cross over the icy bridge and arrive at a round cavern.

The men spread out to explore the cavern and Henderson calls out excitedly, "There's something here!". Henderson whistles in appreciation and pulls a artifact from the snow. The artifact is carved from a transparent teal stone, almost like glass, into the form of a lizard. The stone glowing faintly in the darkness.

Paul Caulfield finds one and exclaims, "Look, another one!" He calls to Henderson and asks, "Whaddya reckon they're worth then?" Stephen notices a splash of dark red on the back wall. He approaches and raises a lantern to find that it's a large wooden carved idol. The carving is just like a Polynesian idol with brightly colored paintings. He suddenly does a double take and notices more of the strange tracks heading off to the right to where Paul is standing.

"Too late," Paul gloats. "There's only four. None for you..." Paul tells Stephen smugly, as Paul picks up his artifact. Stephen runs to him, and sees a dark shadowy form appear on the rock ledge above Paul.

"Paul..." Stephen calls, with great fear in his voice.

"Wha?" Before Paul can say another word, a wolf-like creature lunges and fastens its jaws on Paul's neck. He instantly falls to the ground. The other men scream and run for the cave's exit. Stephen cocks his pistol and takes aim at the creature as it shakes Paul like a rag doll. Stephen fires one shot and hits the beast in the shoulder. The wolf creature yelps and runs away.

"C'mon Stephen!" Smythe calls. Stephen sets his lantern down, picks Paul up on his shoulders and starts to carry him toward the bridge. Paul groans weakly.

The wolf creature returns and sniffs at the pool of blood Paul left behind. It licks the blood and pursues Stephen and Paul. The beast barks out after Stephen and Henderson's urgent cries join Smythes, "Stephen, leg it! Quick!"

Smythe is still urging Stephen, "Faster! C'mon!" The beast catches up with Stephen and Paul just as they arrive at the ice bridge. The added weight of the creature and the two men causes the icy bridge to break away. The huge slab of ice that Stephen is standing on drops down to the icy cavern floor below and starts sledding down the slope. The creature falls behind him and is impaled with a yelp on one of the icy stalagmites. Stephen has no choice but to ride it out, screaming and yelling. The block of ice skids its way through the icy tunnels until it smashes into a wall of ice. The impact of the ice sled blasts through the ice wall and hurls Stephen and Paul through the ice where they land on a snow bank a few metres away. Stephen, lying supine in the deep powder, rolls his head around trying to regain his bearings. Paul's motionless body lies beside him.

The four remaining men dig a grave for Paul in the snow and ice and erect a wooden cross at the head of the shallow grave. Henderson tells the other men, "Nobody better say nothing about this to the guv'ner, else we'll be back having to hunt down that creature for his samples. Paul fell down a crevasse, okay?" All the men mutter in agreement except for Stephen, who stands silent.

Smythe turns to Stephen and asks more poignantly, "Okay Stephen?" Stephen nods in resignation.

Jonson, the quiet one dressed in all black, looks down at the grave and says, "Amen."

Snapping Lara's mind back to the present, Willard interrupts, "Stephen was to be the only survivor of the four." He stands, "When he arrived back in London, he superstitiously sold off his artifact havin' seen his pals murdered or killed with theirs..." He puts away the scanning device and closes the palmtop, and continues, "one here in India, one in the South Pacific, an' one in Nevada. The places where I'd like ye to go."

Lara slaps the journal shut, looks up and grins her sly grin, and says, "Sounds good to me." (follow plot)6

Footnotes:
  1. Although, you can choose which area you want to visit next, because the Traveler's Guide endorses Nevada, USA as the next destination, we have placed the Nevada levels in numerical order after India. However, there is no reason why you couldn't go to the South Pacific or London levels next, and therefore we include links to those levels of the game as well.

  2. The motto around here at the guide has always been, "Although a picture is worth a thousand words, it's faster to turn out a thousand words than to draw the picture." And I've always believed that the thousand words were just as good. That has been true for previous games and levels in Tomb Raider, but for the Caves of Kaliya, I confess that a good map can really help you navigate this maze.

Well, I don't have the time or energy to draw a map to post here for you (though I did sketch one out for myself when I played this level). However, I encourage you to sketch a little map for yourself as you go to help keep you from getting turned around. If you plan on following the directions listed in this walkthrough, I recommend that you start the level from the very beginning and follow the directions very carefully turn by turn from beginning to end to avoid getting turned around. The paragraphs are organized by intersection to help you keep track of where you are.

You can greatly reduce the chances of getting incredibly turned around, and the resultant aimless wandering, significantly if you skip the initial trek to the left side of the maze. All you get are a couple of pickups and kills. If you are willing to let it go, then you can jump here in the walkthrough. Basically turn right and follow the directions from the second sentence of that paragraph.

  3. An alternative method for dealing with this boulder is to slide down the ramp backwards and and immediately jump in place when Lara gets to the bottom of the slope. Thanks to Igor Kudrnovsky for this suggestion. Under the pressure of a boulder chasing Lara down, you may end up running straight ahead. If you do so, head into the left corner of the alcove that the boulder eventually stops in. If you're lucky, the boulder will do no damage to Lara and she is then able to crawl back out of the alcove.

  4. Igor also suggests that instead of the reverse roll, that you hop backwards until the boulder starts to roll, and dash forward when the boulder drops. This works well, but I thought the reverse roll is better for people who work better on the visual cues rather than the audio ones. Thanks again, Igor.

  5. We want to thank Vicky Arnold, script writer at Core Design, for sharing her original scripts for these full motion video sequences with us here at the Guide. The names of the sailors are taken from her script.

  6. Although, you have many choices as to which area you are going next, because the Traveler's Guide endorses Nevada, USA as the next destination, and the plot links will follow the events in that order. There is no reason why you couldn't start the South Pacific or London levels next and follow the plot from that point forward, but you will realize why Nevada is a good choice after the end of the Nevada Desert level.
