Caves of Kaliya |
Items: 12 |
Kills: 15 |
|
| There aren't many hints we can give you for Caves of Kaliya. This level is actually quite small. Unfortunately it's a very confusing maze. Here are a few hints that might get you through. | |||
Initial Choices
|
You are presented with a choice right at the beginning of this level: go left or go right. To the left are a couple of items and a couple of cobra, but it won't get you any closer to finishing this level. If you're not in this for maximum items, then you can pretty much ignore that third of the maze.
Odds
|
This hint doesn't really have an action point. We just wanted to inform you of how the level is laid out and what your odds are of getting through it. There are essentially three separate sections of this maze. We mention that you can ignore one third of it if you're not greedy for a couple of measly pickups. You will have to traverse the other two thirds of the maze. There's no way around it. However, we're not going to leave you without a plan. Below are a few more tips.
Cartography
|
It will be very helpful for you to sketch a little map for yourself as you run around in this level. There are lots of turns, loops, and dead ends in this maze and many of the tunnels look the same. It's very easy to get turned around and disoriented. If you plan on following our walkthrough for this level then we recommend that you follow it from the beginning and make note of where you are in the walkthrough at every intersection.
Right Hand Rule
|
Those that are familiar with calculus and physics need to know that
we're not talking about cross products and vectors. What we mean by
the "right hand rule" or the "left hand rule" in reference to mazes is
that, in a typical maze, it is always possible to find your way
through it if you simply keep a hand on the wall and follow that wall
around until you find your way out. This technique will almost work for the Kaliya labyrinth. There are two tricks in this maze that will cause the technique to fail. First, there is one place in which, if you attempt to follow the rule strictly, you will fall into a deadly pit. If you simply treat pits as walls, you could easily navigate most of this level, except for one caveat. Only one pit is deadly, and annoyingly it divides the maze into two parts. You may eventually meet up with this pit again on the other side. There is another pit in this part of the maze, but that other pit contains a pickup. Try dropping flares down holes to see if you can determine which pit is safe to drop into. The second thing that there is a movable block in the middle of a four way intersection in part of the maze. If you follow the rule strictly, you will go around in circles forever. If you move the block, you change the topography of the maze and, depending on which direction you encounter the block from, you can end up running around the maze forever. We'll get back to the block in another hint below. |
||
Boulderdash
|
Sooner or later you will certainly find yourself at the top of a long slope with a boulder hanging over your head. Your gut instincts are correct, the moment you set foot on the slope, the boulder will drop. To escape the boulder you will have to put one of Lara's fancy new moves into action. The boulder can be avoided fairly easily. Do not try to jump off the slope in an attempt to put distance between you and the boulder. If you jump off the slope too early, the fall down to the ground will be too long, and Lara will pause before getting up. The boulder will catch up with you in that pause.
Dodge Ball
|
This part of the maze is like a twisted game of dodge ball, except giant boulders are being used. After you escape the wrath of one boulder, you will have to deal with a second. Once again, you will have to do a little fancy footwork. For the new Tomb Raider initiates, here is one of those instances where the reverse roll is vital.
Blockout
|
Now, we're back to the problem of that block we mentioned earlier.
First of all, you're probably wondering how you can tell where the
block is or which wall is the block and which way you should push it.
The builders of these caves didn't intend the block to be pulled or
pushed beyond a certain limit. The floor will give you the hint
you need as to where the block is. Now you need to know what you should do about the block, once you find it. If you are using the right or left hand rule in exploring this maze, then you simply need to push the block forward once the first time you encounter it. Why is that important? Because you can actually approach the block from three sides. Among the three different directions you can push it, only one of them will really screw up your rule. If you manage to locate the block when you first encounter it and push it once, simply continue following the rule and you will find the drop to the next part of the maze. |
||
Final Words
|
In regard to the rest of the maze. Once again, you can employ the right or left hand rule to exit the maze. Depending on which way you go after you drop to this part of the maze, you may encounter the other side of the pit we talked about earlier. The exit from the maze is another pit. It will be very clear which pit is the exit. If you come across a pit in which you are unsure whether or not it is the exit, avoid it and treat it as if it were a wall and continue using your right or left hand rule until you find the actual exit.
Snake Pit
|
That hissing sound you hear should clue you in. The exit hole drops you into the middle of a snake pit. You're probably wondering how you're going to navigate a pitch black pit filled with snakes. Well, a little light will be most useful. Don't panic when you drop into the pit and everything will be okay. Note that there are more than four cobra in that pit.
Bowled Over
|
After taking out the first four cobra, take a look around that section of the room before you continue. You'll definitely need to use a flare or two. Notice the big boulder at the top of the ramp. Yup, you get the idea. There's got to be some place in this room that sets it off.
Goodness Gracious
|
Great balls of fire! We've finally manage to track down our friend Tony. Making the earth quake by holding his fists out isn't his only trick. Now he can float and hurl fireballs at you. Again, don't be intimidated. He will fall, and you can kill him from the platform that you first slide onto. Nothing too fancy. Just a few simple moves and a lot of lead will bring him down. That stuff around the platforms isn't water, so don't fall into it.
