The Cold War
Items: 71
Kills: 44
The Cold War isn't very tricky. The hard part may be figuring out where to get to next. Here are some hints to send you on your way.
Shark Bait
It may seem that the people in the chopper are using you as shark bait right at the beginning of the level. You can certainly try to swim around and pick up the harpoon gun and all those harpoons and try to take out the shark, but there's a much easier way. Don't fight the shark on it's own terms. Also, don't make a bee-line to the ledge to exit the glacial sea. The shark will beat you to the ledge every time if you do.
Snowballs and Leopards
Once you're out of the water and exploring the caves, you'll find it home to a family of snow leopards. Beside the leopards, watch out for large icy boulders that can cut short your adventures. One such trap is quite tricky. Don't get caught off guard just because it looks like you're safe.
Ups and Downs
When you've explored the caves to your satisfaction, you will need to climb up a wall of ice to reach the next area. You will soon meet some mercenaries. There's very little room to run, so you might consider looking for a small place to hide, when dealing with them. In the cavern beyond, you'll need to take a jump over the snow bank and climb to the highest point of the mountain. Then there's a fantastically long rope slide down to the bottom.
Knock Knock
The next order of business is to get beyond the building that runs along the right side of the mountain. There is a key that can be had, but you have to deal with the mercenary that's guarding it. Take your time exploring the area outside the building. There's lots of goodies to be had.
Going down
Along the back side of the building is a walkway that provides you with a nice view of what's going on below, but there doesn't appear to be any way down or across the chasm. Getting down to the chasm is a simple matter. Just make sure you land on the ice bridge, preferably the one that extends out of the cave on the left. Otherwise, it's a long way to the bottom.
Snowmobile Tricks
Once you get down into the chasm, it's time for some fun with the snowmobiles. However, the fun will be cut short if you don't remember to open the wooden gate in the building at the opposite end of the chasm. The switch is near the "Sno-Cat". Once you've cleared you're path, it's a fairly simple matter of crossing the chasm and making your way on top of the opposite building, killing anything that gets in your way.
Unarmed Combat
Once you're on the other side of the chasm, you'll soon realize that piloting the unarmed "Sno-Cat" through the open gate is a bad idea. You'll also find that wandering around on foot is also a bad idea. That's where those three wooden platforms in the area beyond comes in really handy.
Uninsured Motorist
This is certainly going to make your insurance premiums go up. Your goal is to crash a snowmobile through one of the three glass windows high up on the mountain. To do this, you will need to carefully hop a snow mobile over the little notch in the corner of the chasm.
Rumble in the Park
In the courtyard beyond, you'll have another encounter with a guy riding an armed snowmobile. Whether you brought the armed snowmobile or not, you should seriously consider using the same strategy as before. After dealing with the snowmobiler, head to the area to the left of the main courtyard. There's a whole bunch of boulders behind a large gate that's just begging to be released.
Cold as Ice
After the boulders crash through the frozen pond, you will be able to swim down into an underwater tunnel and surface in a cave made of ice. You're goal is a large Medi Pack that sits on top of a pillar of ice. There's two ways to get to it. One involves crossing a series of ice bridges that will breakaway when you step on it. The other is more direct, but somewhat less fun. Once you grab it, you'll be in for some excitement.
As the Spirit Moves
Once the boulders break the middle floor of the ice palace, you will make your way down and encounter the spirits of ancient Inuit warriors. Depending on your actions, you can seriously anger these spirits.
Where are the Escalators?
When you've had your fun in the ice palace, it's time to make your way back to the surface. There is a tunnel that leads up to the surface in the back lower corner of the ice cavern. Once you're back at the surface, you can access an area opposite the lake that was formerly blocked off by windows. There's just a few angry mercenaries to deal with and a wooden gate you need to open. The lever that opens it is in the area near the gate itself.
Obstacle Course
When all the mercenaries are dead, take an armed snowmobile with you through the open wooden gate and up the slope. There's a small obstacle course with some jumps and boulders to deal with and you'll eventually end up having a shoot out with two more mercenaries. One of them is carrying a key that will enable you to exit this area.
Getting the Shaft
After taking the key off the downed mercenary, use it to open another wooden door, which will lead to a building with a switch that opens a steel door that leads to the roof of the base. Just a handful of mercenaries stand between you and the end of this level
Getting the Drop
The switch that opens the steel trapdoor is inside the tall structure which stands on four pillars. Once you drop into the hole, it's just a quick swim out of there.
