Gallows Tree
Items: 17
Kills: 0
By the light of the fire, Father Dunstan comments on the pouring rain outside, "This night reminds me of the time out at Connussie1."

"Winston's Home?" Jean-Yves asks.

"Indeed! Yes," Father Dunstan replies. The two men are gathered by the window. Now both are watching the rain. "The staff had taken leave due to flooding. Lara, back when she was a slip of a girl, was staying with Winston and his wife. It was her that contacted me, as a matter of fact. Some trouble out at one of the islands. Weird lights. Manifestations. That sort of thing." As the two men gaze outside, they can see a bolt of lightning strike a tree at the edge of the grounds. The scene brings their minds to Winston's humble home in a little town in Ireland.

"Thought I might be able to help," Father Dunstan continues. "It was on a hellish night like this when I arrived." The night that Father Dunstan describes, so many years ago, indeed was like this night.

In a bedroom of a small cottage, the windows are slightly ajar. Outside it is pouring rain. A young Lara Croft, is found sitting on her bed in Winston's house, dressed in a pair of green shorts and a T shirt. She lays her night gown on the bed and crosses her arms to pull off her shirt and change for bed. As she pulls her shirt above her midriff, she hears a pounding at the front the door. She allows her shirt to fall back down as her curiosity grows. She wonders who can be traipsing around in this weather.

The front door of the cottage creaks open and a back-lit figure with a wide brimmed hat standing is standing in the doorway. The figure, dressed in a long black coat, steps into the humble cottage. The figure speaks, "Evenin' Winston, and how would I be able to help?" The figure steps into the front room of the small house and pulls off his hat to reveal it is none other than a much younger Father Patrick Dunstan.

The two men sit down at a table in the front room. "So people have seen these apparitions out a the island?" Father Dunstan begins.

"There's talk of little else in the village, Bram2. I'm doing all I can to keep this gossip from Lara," a younger Winston confirms. In her bedroom, Lara sneaks up to her bedroom door and opens it slightly to eavesdrop on the men's conversation.

"Aye, yet would be a wise man," Father Dunstan complements Winston. "It would be unwise for her curiosity to draw her to that place."

"And you have some idea of what it could be?" Winston asks.

"To be frank with you, no," Father Dunstan admits. Lara peeks her face out of her room and watches the men. "But as the devil finds work for idle hands, I've spoken with Father Finnegan, and I have a boat chartered for the crossing late on this very evening."

"Good Lord, Bram! You have not chosen the evening for it?" Winston asks. The worry in his voice is quite apparent.

"I have my faith to protect me, Winston," Father Dunstan states firmly. Lara moves back a little into her room.

"Be careful, I fear that on that island it is what you cannot see that will hurt you, Bram"

"Time to get to the bottom of this, old friend." Father Dunstan rises. Lara runs lightly across her room and vaults sprightly out the open window on one hand and drops to the ground outside.

The evening has begun to clear, and the moon is visible through the clouds. There is still a bit of fog hanging over the, now calm, waters. At the docks, Father Dunstan is at the bow of a small boat. The man at the helm applies the throttle and pilots it away from the dock and turns to wave to Winston. Winston, standing on the dock, waves back, and the small boat heads out to sea. In the distance, lighting is still streaking from the sky.

As the boat makes the crossing, the waters of the open sea are choppier than near the shore. Lara, who has snuck aboard is hiding inside a hold on the small boat, pops her head up out of the hold to get a glimpse of what's happening outside.

The boat approaches a rocky island and lightning strikes the island. Father Dunstan, still standing at the bow of the boat, surveys the island. They reach a small wooden dock, where Father Dunstan disembarks.

The boat leaves and Father Dunstan waves to the pilot of the boat. He walks a short distance to a sheer rock face. He operates some kind of secret switch, and a section of the rock swings open, revealing a torch-lit tunnel.

Lara, crouching by the dock watches Father Dunstan step into the tunnel with great interest.
(follow plot)

To Lara's right is a shaft that is a short-cut down to the floor of the canyon, instead turn left and run forward and turn right. Walk forward to the rim of the canyon. Turn right and walk along the edge of the canyon and the rim will bend further to the left, extending over the canyon.

When Lara nears the end of the little ledge, turn left and look down into the canyon to find the flat granite ledge below which is without vegetation. Take a running jump down to the ledge and run forward.

Jump up and grab the crevice in the canyon's face ahead. Shimmy to the left until Lara shimmies around the corner and is dangling over a sloping granite ledge. Release from the crevice and Lara will drop onto the slope and slide down to the less inclined part of the ledge.
SECRET #1
Turn right and walk forward to the edge of the granite slope. Ahead is a rectangular granite slope between two triangular patches of vegetation. Take a standing jump up onto the granite slope, and Lara will immediately begin sliding backward.

Grab the bottom edge of the slope and safety drop to a small ledge below. Lara will slide backwards a little way and come to a stop on a steep triangular ledge. Turn right and walk forward to the edge of the ledge to find a dark cave.

Face the cave entrance and take a standing jump and grab to miss hitting the rock overhang. As soon as Lara enters the cave, a colony of bats will emerge and take nips at Lara. Quickly step forward and pick up a gold rose (1), which is SECRET #1. Turn left and grab the large Medi Pack (2).

Reverse roll, run forward, and turn right. Step out of the cave and drop to a small flat ledge just below the mouth of cave. If Lara slips down to the lower part of the canyon, turn around and climb back up to the ledge.

Turn so that the mouth of the cave is above Lara and to her right. Jump past a pointed slope and walk forward and to the left. Walk forward and pick up a small Medi Pack (3) that is on the ground.

Continue forward, and around to the left to follow the flat ledge at the bottom of the canyon. Angle Lara to the left and allow Lara to slide to the bottom of the canyon. Turn right and run forward until Lara reaches a hollow where the slopes ahead and to either side are too steep to tread.

Take a jump forward out of the hollow and turn right. Run forward and climb up onto the flat square rock ledge with the vegetation growing on it, below the mouth of a tunnel. Turn left and take a standing jump to a triangular flat area along the ledge ahead.

Take another standing jump to the square ledge in the corner and pick up another small Medi Pack (4). Turn around and take a standing jump back to the triangular flat area, and take another standing jump back to the square ledge.

Turn left, run forward and climb up into the tunnel. Run forward into the tunnel and turn left when Lara reaches the end of the tunnel. Jump up and grab the tunnel above. Pull up into the tunnel above and run forward. Climb up into the tunnel above.

Run forward to the end of the tunnel and reverse roll. Walk forward and jump up to grab the rim of the shaft. Climb back up to the to path above. Run forward and turn right and return to the edge of the canyon.

Take a running jump back down to the granite ledge. Run forward, grab the crevice in the face of the canyon. Shimmy to the left until Lara shimmies around the corner. Release and allow Lara to drop to the granite slope below. Allow Lara to slide forward to where the slope is less inclined.
Turn right and walk forward to the edge of the ledge. Aim Lara for the rectangular granite slope between the two triangular ledges covered with vegetation. Lara will slide backwards and grab the bottom edge of the ledge.

Shimmy to the right until Lara shimmies around the corner of the ledge. Continue to shimmy to the right until Lara is dangling over a small crawlspace. Release from the ledge and grab the crawlspace below.

Pull up into the crawlspace and crawl forward until Lara can stand. Run forward and Lara will slide down to a flat ledge below. Turn right, run forward, and vault up onto a small square ledge.

Turn right again, jump straight up and grab the vines growing below the ledge above. Swing forward until Lara is above a small sloped ledge. Release and allow Lara to slide into a tunnel ahead.

Run forward into the tunnel and turn right. Drop into the shallow pit and pick up a large Medi Pack (5). Reverse roll, run forward and vault up out of the pit. Run forward and allow Lara to slide down the tunnel. Run forward into the clearing beyond.

Lara steps forward cautiously. She is startled by the ring of a church bell from the tower behind her. She turns and looks up at the tower, and then turns back and continues to move forward.

Suddenly in a flash of light with the crackling of electricity, a decomposing corpse suddenly appears, dangling by a noose from the gnarled tree ahead. The corpse is swinging slowly in the wind and missing one hand.

It begins to speak, "Come child. Come closer for I have gifts for thee."

"I'll stay where I am," Lara answers bravely.

The corpse lets out a sinister laugh. The rope creaks as the corpse continues to swing in the wind as it attempts to reassure Lara, "Fear not this visage. It is but a vessel for my troubled spirit." It takes a creepy labored breath and continues. "Hsst.. Come closer for you are safe while I am hung like so much butchered meat."

"Who are you?" Lara asks nervously.

"Who?" The corpse asks back wondering how to answer, but continues along a different tack, "Hmm... For it is more like what. Condemned to wander between the kingdoms of man and that of the elementals. Hmm... But I must be swift in my request. Hsst... For they watch and wait to once more draw me back into the darkness." The corpse gestures in a sort of general way with its one hand.

"Request?" Lara asks.

"My heart, girl," the corpse answers impatiently. "They have hidden my petrified heart in this, the World Tree." The corpse gestures again, this time to what appears to be a grove of trees off to Lara's left. "Down under the watchful gaze of the dragon, Neadhog. Hmm... Find this, my child, and return it to its rightful resting place." The corpse gestures once more at the gaping hole in its chest. "Hsst... And you shall be rewarded!"

"And why on earth should I trust you?" Lara asks skeptically, with the emphasis on "you".

"Not on earth, girl," the corpse answers. "In between." It chuckles and coughs. "My soul is gone and how it fares nobody knows and nobody cares." It chuckles once more, and with a electrical zap and a flash the corpse is gone, leaving just the gnarled tree in the clearing with a small campfire.

Be careful not to step too close to the campfire. Also avoid walking too close to the well ahead and to the right. Doing so will cause an imp to emerge from the small barrel beside the well. Since Lara is unarmed, dealing with the imp tends to be problematic.
SECRET #2
Rather than proceeding forward, turn around instead, and walk back toward the ramp that Lara slid down through. Turn left and walk to an alcove between the brick wall that is beside the opening to the ramp and a brick pillar.

Turn right and grab the bottom of the slope. Pull up and before Lara slides backwards take a backflip off the slope to land on top of the pillar. Pick up a gold rose (6), which is SECRET #2. Turn right and drop back down to the ground. Turn right to face the campfire.
Turn right again and walk around the brick pillar. Stay as close to the brick pillar as possible and run forward toward the rock overhang ahead. There is a crawlspace below, but ignore it for now. Instead, turn left and jump up and grab the wooden beams attached to the underside of the rock ledge above.

Swing forward until Lara can drop onto a ledge ahead. A colony of bats will emerge, but quickly run forward and turn left. Climb up to the ledge ahead. Turn left and walk forward to the edge of the ledge.

Either take a standing jump or a swan dive into the well below. Rotate Lara downward and to the left and swim downward. When Lara reaches the bottom of the well, level her out and swim forward.

She will reach an intersecting underwater tunnel, so turn right. Continue swimming forward until Lara reaches an intersecting underwater tunnel. Turn right once again and follow this next tunnel as it angles upward.

Soon Lara will reach a square underwater chamber. Do not be fooled by the shaft leading upward. Instead, turn left and swim deeper down into another underwater tunnel. This tunnel will end at a shaft, so rotate Lara upward and surface.

With Lara facing the building with the wooden dock, swim to the left toward the small sandy ledge in the corner. If Lara swims to the right, then a swarm of rats will appear an drop into the water and harass her. Pull out of the water onto the sandy ledge.

Angle Lara toward the rocky ledge beside the wooden dock, and walk forward to the edge of this sandy ledge and take a standing jump to the rocky ledge adjacent to the building. Turn right and walk forward and step up onto wooden dock.

Turn right and walk out to the end of the wooden dock. Turn left and walk to the corner of the wooden dock. Locate the long slope that leads down from the adjacent building. Take a hop back and a running jump over the water to the slope. Take a leap off the slope3, and Lara will bounce around the corner of the building and land on a wooden ledge.

Run forward and turn left to find a crawlspace that leads underneath the first building. Crouch down and crawl forward into the building. When Lara is inside the building, step forward and pick up a large Medi Pack (7). Turn around and angle Lara to the left.
Rubber Tube
Run forward and search the drawers of the cabinet on the wall ahead to find a Rubber Tube (8), which is presumably the inner tube of the broken bicycle leaning against the opposite wall. Turn right and run forward to drop into the water.

Swim down and swim through the underwater tunnel until the tunnel intersects with a shaft. Surface again and turn Lara to the right. Return to the sandy ledge and pull up out of the water.

Turn around and take a standing jump over the sloping wooden dam and into the separated pond. Quickly swim across the pond and pull out of the water at the low ledge at the other side of the pond and slightly to the left. Move quickly now, as a swarm of rats will drop into the water.

Turn right and jump up to the higher ledge. Turn left and enter the tunnel. Turn right and run forward. When Lara comes to a crawlspace, crouch down and crawl through the crawlspace back to the clearing with the well and the gnarled tree.

Immediately stand up and jump up to grab the wooden bars overhead. Wait for the rats to disperse, and release to drop back to the ground. Stay as close as possible to the brick pillar on the left to avoid alerting the imp and head toward the tower ahead and to the left.

At the far corner of the tower, Lara will find a crawlspace. Turn left, crouch down and crawl down into the crawlspace. Lara can stand at the bottom of the crawlspace. Turn right and step forward.
Pitchfork
Turn left and continue forward along the sandy path. Angle Lara to the left and enter the dark misty basement ahead and pick up a broken Pitchfork (9). Turn around and exit the dark basement and turn around.

Jump up and grab the ledge above the basement entrance and pull up onto the ledge in front of the boarded up building. Combine the rubber tube with the pitchfork to form a Catapult and use it in front of the boarded up building.

Lara will examine the chamber behind the boards to spot a chain attached to a loose brick. She pulls the little catapult out of her backpack and looks around the ground for a rock.

Finding a suitable stone for the job, she places the stone in the rubber tube, takes aims at the loose brick and fires the rock. The rock hits its mark, and the brick breaks free, causing the chain to shoot up toward the two bells. The two bells ring once or twice and then fall to the ground.

The fall of the two large bells cause debris to shoot out in all directions, blowing the away boards that formed the barricade. Lara dives out of the way to avoid getting hit by the debris that is blasting through the barricade.
Iron Clapper
Angle Lara to the left and run forward into the bell tower toward the two bells. Pick up the Iron Clapper (10). Angle Lara to the right and run between the two bells to find a hole in the bottom of the bell tower.

Drop into the tunnel and turn Lara to the right. Run through the tunnel to emerge on the hillside beyond the bell tower. When Lara reaches the end of the tunnel, turn left and vault up into the crypt.
Wooden Torch
Run to the left of the coffin to find a wooden torch (11). Pick it up and turn around. Run forward to the mouth of the tunnel. Angle Lara to the left and take a jump over the tunnel and proceed up the path.

The first crypt on the right contains no items, but enter the first crypt on the left to find a small Medi Pack (12). Lara will have to drop the torch to pick up the pack. Once Lara has the item, pick up the torch again.

Exit this crypt and turn left to continue up the path which will wind around to the left. Lara can enter the next crypt on the right to light the torch, or she can do it later, but having a lit torch will make it easier to find when Lara has to drop it here and there.

Exit the crypt and Lara can run past the next crypt on the right which doesn't contain any items. Toss the torch down the shaft ahead and then turn around and climb down the ladder into the shaft.

Grab the torch and turn around. Walk forward until Lara reaches an intersection of tunnels. It will be quite apparent that the floor ahead is a trap if Lara is carrying a lit torch. Turn right and run up the slope.

Follow the tunnel as it winds to the left and intersects another tunnel. Lara can light the wooden torch she is carrying on the lit torch mounted on the wall on the right if it is not already lit.
SECRET #3
Drop the torch here and turn right. Run forward toward the lit torch mounted on the wall and turn right. Run down the ramp and turn right. A colony of bats will appear, so run up and down the ramp until they disperse.

Proceed down the ramp as it winds to the right and stop before Lara steps into the field of tall spikes that are below the trapdoors above. Crouch down and crawl into the field of spikes. Lara can walk through the spikes, but when she crouches down or stands, she will take damage, so crouch down now.

As Lara crawls through the spikes, the ceiling above will collapse down on her but it won't cause her any damage. When Lara reaches the far end of the field of spikes, she can crawl right into the crawlspace. Crawl forward and when Lara can stand up, do so and collect a large Medi Pack (13). Step forward and pick up the gold rose (14) which is SECRET #3.

Turn around and run forward to the crawlspace. Crouch down and crawl forward all the way to the other end of the field of spikes. Turn left while still crawling and crawl out of the field of spikes before standing up.

Run forward and follow the tunnel as it spirals to the left twice, and pick up the torch from where you dropped it.
Proceed down the ramp away from the mounted lit torch and another colony of bats will emerge in the tunnel ahead. Quickly reverse roll, and run up and down the ramp until they disperse.

When the bats are gone, proceed back down the ramp. To the left is the trapdoors with a field of spikes below that Lara avoided by using the upper ramp, so turn right and follow the tunnel as it bends to the left and heads upward.
Heart
The tunnel will bend to the left once more and head up into a room with roots that dangle down from the ceiling. Use the torch to ignite the roots, and a heart will drop from the roots. Drop the torch and pick up the Heart (15).

When Lara picks up the heart, a stone door will slide open. Lara turns and steps toward the opening and slides down the slope beside the opening. She pokes her head around the corner and peers down into the chamber below.

She hears the voice of Father Dunstan over a unnatural hissing and groaning, "Go back to your slumberings. This is but a child, and she shall not cross your path
4 as you shall not cross hers" Lara finds Father Dunstan leaning over a deep pit performing some sort of rite.

"Come closer for often5 it is easier to be brave from a distance," the unnatural voice calls out.

"I am here now," Father Dunstan calls down into the pit. "And I have a gift for you, you cantankerous worm." He tosses something into the pit.

The voice seethes with anger and calls out, "Arrgh! Curse you priest! If you live till doomsday you shall burn a week longer than the world! I swear!"

Father Dunstan turns casually to Lara and shrugs casually, "Iron. Never found a demon yet that doesn't burn at its touch."

"What was in the hole?" Lara asks timidly.

"In the... Nevermind that," Father Dunstan quickly changing the subject. "What on earth are you doing here? No, don't bother," He quickly decides that he doesn't want to know. "We'll get on to that later. Right now we need to get you out to somewhere safe until the morning. That's assuming you'll stay in once place, young lady."

"Nothing with demons, right?" Lara asks sweetly.

"Well, I can't promise anything in this God-forsaken place. I'll light the way and go on ahead to clear out any unwelcome guests. Now once you're out, head to the chapel over the bridge. I'll meet you there." Father Dunstan turns and begins to go. Suddenly he stops and turns to Lara, "I'm forgetting me manners. Don't speak to strange things and if there's anything around, and trust in me skills in this area there shouldn't be. Iron, girl. Use iron to repel 'em. See you on top. Keep your wits about you." Father Dunstan finishes dispensing his advice and moves up the tunnel.
(follow plot)

Turn right and run up the slope toward the that opening that Father Dunstan exited through and pick up a small Medi Pack (16). Turn right and slide down the ramp6. Lara will slide through the darkness and emerge at the top of another ramp.

Turn left and run down the ramp toward the well. Immediately turn left and run towards the brick pillar. Turn right when Lara reaches the pillar, turn right and head toward the brick tower. The barrel beside the well will roll over and an imp7 (1) will emerge.

Turn left and crouch down when Lara reaches the crawlspace. Crawl down into the crawlspace and continue through until Lara can stand. Quickly turn right and run forward and follow the path as it bends to the left.

Jump up and grab the ledge in front of the bell tower. Lara can now safely turn around and take a good look at the evil little bugger. When she's had her fill, turn and reenter the bell tower.

Run around behind the bells and drop back into the tunnel below the bell tower. Turn right and run through the tunnel. Vault out of the other end of the tunnel. Run up the path and follow it as it bends around to the left.

Turn when Lara returns to the shaft that leads down into the underground tunnels, turn left and head toward the wooden door at the top of the path. Turn right and place the heart into the niche in the bricks.

The wooden door behind Lara will swing open, but a sinister little cackle will indicate that little imps are awakening and emerging from all over the hillside. Several imps can be seen emerging from the crypts along the hillside.

If Lara stands around she will find two imps
8 (2, 3) will arrive. If she wanders back down the path she will encounter two more imps (4, 5). Rather than waste your time with these pesky critters, quickly reverse roll, run forward and turn right. Enter the newly opened doorway.

Inside the chamber, Lara finds a large brick slab. As she examines it, several of the imps sneak up behind her. She hears them, turns and pulls out the iron clapper and waves it at them, causing them to stumble backwards9. Lara tosses the clapper at them, which bumps into four of the imps. The four imps that come into contact with the iron clapper disappear in a puff of smoke. Lara turns her attention back to the brick slab. She pushes it forward and it slides out of the way.

The remaining two imps will flee. Step forward and drop into the opening. Crawl forward and turn left. Continue crawling forward until Lara can stand. Climb up into the tunnel above, and then step forward and climb up into the tunnel above that one.

Turn right and step forward. Angle Lara to the right and run straight through the zigzag passageway. Lara will emerge at the bridge. Run across the bridge and another colony of bats will attack from behind.

Quickly snatch up the large Medi Pack (17) that is sitting on the bridge, and continue to the other side. Turn left and vault up into the tunnel above. Turn right and run forward. Climb up into the higher tunnel.

Follow the tunnel as it bends to the left and back to the right and emerges in an abandoned chapel.

Footnotes:
  1. According to Richard Morton, a level designer for Tomb Raider: Chronicles at Core Design, "Winston's home town is called Connusie." I'm not sure where all the references to "The Black Isle" on the web originated from. Originally I fell prey to the peer pressure and marked these levels as occuring on the Black Isle, which is in Scotland, but I've repented and we're going to go with what we get directly from the developers. That's our story and we're sticking to it. Thanks Rich, for setting us straight.

  2. Once again, as per a correspondence from Richard Morrton, "Father Dunstans full name is Bram Patrick Dunstan"

  3. Depending on how you approach the slope you may leap forward or backflip off the slope. You can adjust accordingly.

  4. Is it "path"? I can't tell.

  5. Mumbling demons can be such a bother. I'm not totally sure it is "for often", but again, thats what my ears tell me.

  6. It's actually easier to return the way you came. It is shorter and avoids an imp, but I'm taking you this way to let you get a gander at the little bugger, and to give you a look at the whole level. If you're not interested, feel free to head back through the room with the burnt roots, through the tunnels, and climb up the shaft to the top of the path. If you do so skip down to the point in the walk through at the paragraph that begins, "Turn when Lara returns to the shaft that leads down into the underground tunnels..."

  7. I'm counting this one imp as an enemy, but since you can't kill it, it won't be counted in the total number of kills for this level.

  8. Once again, I'm counting the imps to indicate the number of enemies. None of these will increment the kill counter since you don't really have to do anything to defeat them.

  9. If Lara is not carrying the iron clapper, then the little imps will swarm her and push out of the chamber and disappear. Each time Lara attempts to reenter the chamber without the clapper, the scene will repeat.
